Refugee Services of Texas is a social service agency providing support to refugees and other displaced people. They are looking for people to serve as a welcome team for a vulnerable family. Co-sponsors are usually faith-based, community, and university groups that accept the serious commitment to help refugee families become culturally adjusted, emotionally secure, and ultimately self-sufficient as they begin their new lives in Austin. Co-sponsors offer refugees a higher form of support through friendship, along with basic resettlement services like orientation to a new environment and culture, building language skills, providing transportation to medical appointments, and assistance with initial housing, food, and clothing. Refugee Services of Texas offers trainings and education for individuals and groups who are interested. A typical co-sponsorship opportunity lasts for three months. Volunteers should be open to working with diverse populations and able to safely transport clients.
