My wife, Jill, and I have been attending the Austin Stone since 2007. I've been in Austin since 2004, when I started attending the University of Texas. We have a son, John, and a daughter, Emma, and live in north Austin. I spend my workdays as a structural engineer in northwest Austin, and enjoy spending time with my kids, date nights with my wife, the occasional round of golf, and watching football with our neighbors.
Jesus has saved me from a life of judgmentalism, arrogance, and self-centeredness. Before Jesus, I was an outwardly "good" person. I got A's in school, I didn't drink alcohol or do drugs. I was on the "right path" according to everything that our society says I should have been doing.
But, to be honest, I was doing the exact opposite of what Jesus tells us is most important. I was loving myself as God and either ignoring the people around me or judging them as inferior to me.
The summer before high school, my parents started taking our family to church in Houston, and I started learning what it meant to follow Jesus and to genuinely love other people. God softened my heart to turn to Him, and opened my eyes to see that I was living a life for myself and on my own strength that was sinful toward God and other people...and that it was unsatisfying and only leading to death! I professed faith in Jesus and God has continued to humble me ever since and actually give me a true joy and love for other people!
As I serve as an elder at our Downtown campus, I pray that God will use me to help His people know, love, and obey Him so that they can experience the freedom and love of Christ!
