Before you begin, take a few moments to quiet your mind and prepare your heart to receive God’s Word. Read the following passage at least twice, and then pray through the points below.
17 In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to be proud of my work for God. 18 For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience—by word and deed, 19 by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God—so that from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ; 20 and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else's foundation, 21 but as it is written, “Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.”
In stating his ambition to take the gospel to those who have not yet heard, Paul is quoting Isaiah: “Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand” (52:15). Paul believed what God said through Isaiah: if he took the gospel to people who had never been told, they would see. If he took it to those who had never heard, they would understand. Do you believe we will see salvation among the nations if we are faithful to take the gospel to them? Take a few moments to reflect on your answer. Ask God to give you faith to believe that people who have not yet seen and heard will come to faith if the Word is preached to them.
Ask God to give us courage to preach the gospel where Christ has not been named. Pray for gifted preachers and teachers to go to the nations, that they would be part of a new work for the sake of the gospel. Pray that goers would have courage to leave our culture to build new gospel-centered foundations in unknown cultures, for the glory of God.
Pray that the primary words on our lips would always be about what Christ has accomplished. Pray for men and women who deeply love Jesus and love declaring His Word to take up the call to go to the nations. Pray that, by the Spirit of God, they would boldly declare the truth of Christ in word and deed, that the blind may see and the deaf may hear.
