Before you begin, take a few moments to quiet your mind and prepare your heart to receive God’s Word. Read the following passage at least twice, and then pray through the points below.
16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
Jesus laid down His life for us at Calvary so that we could be reconciled to the Father. This is the most beautiful example we have of sacrificial love. Take a few moments to reflect on Jesus's love for us, that while we were still sinners, still enemies of God, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Let that overwhelming love spur on your prayers today.
We can also lay down our lives for one another daily, thus imaging the love Christ has for us. By dying to our own desires and seeking to serve others, we show the kind of sacrifice that Christ said is true love. Pray that God would give us joy in sacrificing for one another. Pray that this would be a strong testimony to the unreached, who have never seen or experienced the love of Christ.
Words are cheap if we don't pair them with truth and action. Pray that God would make us a people who not only love with our words but also act in ways that show Christ's love. Pray that we would not shy away from showing love, even if it costs us something. Ask God to make us a people who show our love by giving of ourselves to others in tangible ways.
