Before you begin, take a few moments to quiet your mind and prepare your heart to receive God’s Word. Read the following passage at least twice, and then pray through the points below.
1 Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
The early Church fasted and prayed to seek God's will, just as we are doing during these 40 days. We, ourselves, are the fruit of their labor and prayer—the gospel has come to us from them. The gospel has spread from continent to continent throughout the generations because the church was faithful to seek God and send people out, according to His will. Take a few moments to thank God for this example of how He responds when we fast and pray for His will to be revealed and done. Thank Him for the example of the early Church seeking Him in this way.
Barnabas and Saul were faithful to respond to those who sent them and go to unreached peoples. Pray for those in our church who will respond in obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit, that they will obey the command in Scripture to leave the local church they know to go live among a people they do not yet know. Pray for these goers to trust that God will provide what they need. Pray that those who stay behind will faithfully provide support through prayer, fasting, and meeting the needs of the goers.
Thank God that He speaks to us through His Word and that we have the Holy Spirit inside of us to testify to all that is true.
