Why do we fast and pray? When we intentionally seek God through prayer and abstain from food for a designated period with a spiritual purpose (fast), we testify that our ultimate sustenance is found in God alone.
"Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God." (Matt. 4:4)
We can believe that God hears us every time we pray, because His Word tells us that’s true. When we pray regularly and with urgency, we testify to God’s faithfulness in our lives and to the power and necessity of prayer in desiring His will to be done.
God’s Word tells us that fasting matters—that the act of abstaining from food actually does something spiritually significant in our lives. When we fast regularly and with urgency, we testify that God is our ultimate provision. We trust Him to sustain us as we follow Him and seek His will.
We have created a day-by-day guide for you to read Scripture and intentionally pray God's Word and His promises for the nations. You will find a calendar at the bottom of each page of this site with a link to each day's Scripture and prayer guide.
We will also fast together as a church for six of these days. Read the section on this site called Basics of Prayer and Fasting to learn the basics about fasting if you are unfamiliar with this spiritual discipline. You will find the Fasting Guide, including Scripture and prayer points, on Tuesday of each week on the site calendar.
Lastly, each week we will have a Community Guide for you to use weekly in your missional community. This part of the guide provides reflection and discussion questions for you to answer and process together each week. Our hope is that, by processing and discussing your experiences together, you can encourage one another and spur one another on to love and good works (Heb. 10:24-25).
We want to encourage everyone who is able to join us, the entire Austin Stone body of believers across all campuses, in fasting from food each Tuesday during the 40-day period.
However, we know that some of you have health restrictions or other circumstances in which it would be impossible or unwise to fast from food during this period. If you can't fast from food, that's okay; we want everyone in our church to be safe and wise regarding the decision to fast.
For those unable to fast from food, please consider the alternatives below, and fast along with the rest of the church each Tuesday.
- Media such as social sites, television, video games, or internet.
- Any other regular enjoyment that can distract you from enjoying God.
If you have any further questions about fasting, please refer back to one of the other fasting links on the main page of this site, or talk to your campus leadership team.
