Discussion Guide

1 John 5:1–12 | 1 John 3:3–8

  1. Read John 3:3–8. What does it mean to be “born again,” and when did that happen for you? Briefly explain and share that story with one another.
  2. Read 1 John 5:1–5. According to 1 John 5:2, what is the tangible evidence that we are actually loving the children of God? What does that look like in your life right now?
  3. The language and logic in this passage can be a little tricky to understand, but take a shot: with the full context of 1 John 5:1–5, what is the point John makes in verse 5:5? What does it mean to “overcome the world,” and how do we do that?
  4. As you have walked with Jesus, in what specific ways have you noticed your desires beginning to change? What are some sins that used to feel so natural to you but now, through the Spirit, are no longer so desirable?
  5. Read 1 John 5:6–12. How often do you consider the Holy Spirit living inside you, as a Christian? How often does He guide you into all truth and bear witness that you are a child of God? The Holy Spirit is continually at work in the hearts of believers. How does He continually testify to you that Jesus is the Christ?
  6. Spend a few moments going around and encouraging each person in your group with specific ways you have noticed God working in each other’s lives. Where have you seen the Spirit at work in and through them? Then go to God in prayer for one another.
