2 Kings 15:32–38 | 2 Chronicles 27:1–9

  1. Who is the best leader you have ever known who wasn't flashy or boastful? What qualities made them such a strong leader
  2. Read The Introduction of Isaiah and An Overview of Jotham. Briefly, what stands out to you about the life and reign of King Jotham?
  3. Read 2 Chronicles 27:1-9. Despite ruling for a relatively long time, Jotham's reign is one of the shortest accounts of the Judean kings. Nevertheless, he is one of the few kings who was counted righteous all the way to the end of his life. Make some observations from the passage about his reign and leadership qualities.
  4. Despite his successes, Jotham did not enter the temple of the LORD like his father, Uzziah (verse 27:2). What does Jotham's example tell us about humility and knowing one's place before God? How do some leaders get this wrong?
  5. It can be tempting to become overconfident in our own achievements. What keeps you from having an outsized estimation of yourself with your own areas of expertise? Said another way: what keeps you humble?
  6. Think about the areas of life where God has entrusted you with responsibility and influence (work, family, friends, etc.). In what ways are you like Jotham, and in what ways are you unlike him?
  7. Think about leadership qualities that people in your life tend to elevate. Do people today seem to value, elect, or follow leaders such as Jotham? Why do you think that is?
  8. Though history hardly remembers Jotham, he was known by God. The world celebrates what is seen, but God treasures what is faithful. How are you living your life now in ways that will still matter in eternity? Spend some time discussing and then go to God in prayer. Ask that He would reorient (if necessary) your ambition in life to care more about the things that God loves than the things the world values.
