1 John 3:11–18 | 1 John 15:9–13

1. Read John 15:9–13. "Love" is one of the most used and least defined words in our culture. I love pizza. I love my dog. I love this weather. I love my kids. I love Jesus. Sometimes all we mean by "love" is just an expression of preference, at other times it's more serious, but overall, the true meaning seems to have been diluted. Notice every time the word “love” or “loved” is used by Jesus in John 15:9–13, and then discuss what you think Jesus means. In other words, according to Jesus, what does it look like to truly love someone?
2. Read John 3:11-15. The word "hate" is also thrown around constantly in our culture. It's used to refer to everything from foods, clothing trends, rival sports teams, to the cancer that plagues a loved one. John tells us that hate is a serious issue. Notice every time John uses "hates" in verses 11–15. What are we guilty of if we hate our brother? What does this tell you about Jesus' view of hating others?
3. John wisely points out that hatred is almost never really about the person you hate. It is almost always about what that person's life forces you to see about yourself. You don’t necessarily have to name names, but is there anyone in your life who is consistently difficult for you to love? Why do you think that is? As you share, be careful not to let this conversation turn into gossip. What sins or failures of your own do you think could be at the root of any bitterness or coldness you carry toward them right now?
4. Read 1 John 3:16-18. What are some real-life examples of the way you’ve seen love displayed as mentioned in 3:16?
5. What do you think John means in verse 3:18? What is a specific, practical way that God may be calling you to not necessarily lay down your life, but lay down your goods to serve the need of someone in your life?
6. Spend some time in prayer together. Confess to God and one another about any hate, bitterness, or coldness you have harbored in your heart. Meditate on the love God has shown you in Jesus, and confess your ongoing need for the love of Christ to abide in you!
