2 Kings 1 | 2 Chronicles 28

  1. Read An Overview of Ahaz. Briefly, what stands out to you about the life and reign of King Ahaz?
  2. Read 2 Chronicles 28:1-5 and 16-21. What patterns of cause and effect do you see in Ahaz's story according to this passage?
  3. By adopting pagan practices (v. 28:2-5) and aligning with Assyria (v. 28:16), what do you think Ahaz was trying to accomplish? How did that work out for him?
  4. An idol is anything we trust, love, or depend on to do for us what God only offers in Himself. While we might not look to stone and metal objects, our culture has its own idols. Power, comfort, approval, control, fame, influence, money, sex, success, security, achievement, pleasure, beauty, relationships, and even religion itself is an idol when pursued apart from genuine faith in God. What are some modern-day idols that seem to influence or captivate people around you?
  5. Under threat, Ahaz made a political alliance with Assyria instead of crying out to God. Fear often has a way of revealing your true savior. What are your Assyrians? Where do you instinctively turn and what do you trust whenever you feel out of control?Be honest.
  6. Read 2 Chronicles 28:22-25. What did Ahaz's faithlessness look like according to verses 28:23-25? Talk about everything he did that Scripture calls "faithless" and why each of those things provoked the anger of the LORD.
  7. In what ways have you seen Christians tempted to adopt the world's values or blend in practices that diminish God's holiness and high standards for His people?
  8. Read Isaiah's Prophecy. Spend a few moments reflecting on the truth that Jesus Christ is our Immanuel (Matthew 1:22-23). "God with us" means that you are never alone—not in fear, not in failure, not in anything. Go to God in prayer with one another, confessing where you've depended on or trusted in other things to give you what God only offers in Himself.

OVerview

Ahaz’s reign was marked by fear, idolatry, and political maneuvering. His story is tragic, the outcome of unbelief disguised as strategy. But in the midst of it all, God offered a sign. The story of Ahaz confronts us with a question: Where do you turn when fear and anxiety take hold?
