Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble” (John 16:33), and “You will be hated by all for my name’s sake” (Matthew 10:22). In what ways have you found this to be true in your life as a Christian? Give some examples.
Read Hebrews 11:23. Of all the stories from Exodus that the author could have referenced about Moses, Hebrews 11 features this one first, recognizing that his readers were also fearful of trusting in the Lord when it would surely set them at odds with the governing authorities. Can you think of any situations you could face where obedience to God would put you at odds with governing authorities? What would being faithfully obedient to God look like in those situations?
Read Hebrews 11:24–26. As a member of the royal household, Moses had access to every imaginable luxury and privilege. What do we see about Moses’ heart and motivations for obeying God despite his privileged status? In what specific ways are you tempted to enjoy “the fleeting pleasures of sin” today? Be honest.
Read Hebrews 11:27–28. If you are familiar with the stories referenced here, spend a few minutes discussing the details and context. How do the episodes referenced in these verses prefigure or foreshadow the person and work of Jesus?
Read Hebrews 11:29. Fear of man and uncertain circumstances could have paralyzed God’s people at any point. But faith in God’s promise moved them forward. What are some specific circumstances in your life where you are tempted to fear man more than you fear God? Spend some time reflecting and then bring these things to God in prayer.
