Hebrews 2:5-10

  1. Read Hebrews 2:5–8. This text points toward the future—“the world to come.” All throughout Hebrews, the author regularly draws the reader to consider a future world awaiting them. Why? How can contemplating the future help you persevere now in this life?
  2. Hebrews 2:6 quotes Psalm 8, which says, “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him?” These words are a meditation on the creation account in which human beings are made in the divine image and are summoned to rule the world for God. Humans are intended to rule the world, and that rule will apparently include reigning even over the angels. Why do you think God elevates humanity above everything else in creation? Is this elevation deserved? Why or why not?
  3. Read Hebrews 2:8–10. Humans were destined for many things that have not happened. Creation was designed to be under our rule and dominion (Genesis 1:28), but sin and death frustrated this rule (Genesis 3:16–19). Our place in creation was broken. Our history is littered with destruction and stained by death. But God Himself enters into our history and humanity. How does Jesus, as the true representative of humanity, fulfill God’s command to place everything in creation under subjection? In other words, how does Jesus perfectly fulfill what all humans in history have failed to do?
  4. Jesus never asks you to do anything He was unwilling to do. Hebrews 2:10 says, “For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.” Are you suffering? So has Jesus. Your suffering is not random, nor is it meaningless or permanent. Where do you see death still reigning in this life? Bring these things to God in prayer. Praise Him that those things will not have the last word.
