Is there anything going on in your life right now where you are desperate to experience God’s grace and mercy? If anyone feels comfortable sharing, please do.
Read Hebrews 4:14–16. What is your current understanding of the priesthood in the Old Testament? Who were high priests, what did they do, and why? (This will also be studied in greater depth in upcoming sessions.)
Notice the phrase “let us hold fast our confession” in verse 14. What is our confession? For help, see 1 Timothy 6:12, 2 Corinthians 9:13, and Hebrews 10:23.
How do we “hold fast” to our confession (verse 14)? What does that look like?
As we will see in passages to come, the high priest must be called to his office by God. He must be able to sympathize with those whom he represents. In what ways is Jesus able to sympathize with us? How does knowing Jesus is our great High Priest enable us to hold firm to our faith?
Read Hebrews 4:16 again. Why are Christians able to speak honestly before God, without fear of condemnation? Are you often honest with God? Are you often honest with others? Why or why not?
Let’s put Hebrews 4:16 into practice. Spend some time in prayer with one another. Confess to God and one another your needs. Ask for mercy and grace in your time of need today.
