Discussion Guide

2 Kings 12 | 2 Chronicles 24

  1. Read From Athaliah to Joash and An Overview of Joash. Briefly, what stands out to you about King Joash?
  2. Think over your walk with the Lord. Who has been the most influential voice or presence in helping you grow in your faith? How did they shape the way you perceive the world and follow Jesus today?
  3. Read 2 Chronicles 24:1-14. Pay attention to each time Jehoiada is mentioned. As a guide to the king, what specific activities did Jehoiada seem to care about most?
  4. What could it look like for you to be like Jehoiada—helping others walk faithfully with God? If you're a parent, what lessons can you learn from Jehoiada to help shape your children? If you're not a parent, who could you mentor in a way similar to that of Jehoiada and Joash?
  5. Read 2 Chronicles 24:15-19. Have you ever been deeply influenced by someone in your faith for a time who later drifted from your life or from the Lord? If so, tell that story and explain how it affected your walk with the Lord.
  6. Read The Treachery of Joash, The Fragility of Borrowed Faith, and Philippians 2:12-13. If you're honest, does it ever feel like your obedience or devotion is driven more by habit, expectation, or the influence of others than by personal conviction? How does Philippians 2:12-13 help you understand what it means to "work out your salvation," even when no one is watching? Spend some time sharing, encouraging, and exhorting one another. Finally, go to God in prayer. Confess to God and one another where your faith feels fragile.

OVerview

What role do other Christians play in your faith? It’s significant, but not enough to get you to the end. Tyler David explores King Joash’s reign and how proximity to faithful people should not be mistaken for a true, personal relationship with Jesus.
