Discussion Guide

Hebrews 13:1-3

  1. Read Hebrews 13:1–3 and discuss the main points and instructions you see in this passage.
  2. The epilogue of Hebrews begins with a call to let love continue. Hebrews 13:2–6 will describe the nature of that love and some of the ways it ought to play out. But notice how the love we are instructed to persevere in is not just any kind of love. Hebrews 13:1 instructs us to persevere in “brotherly love,” signifying that the nature of love Christians share with one another is a familial love. Meditate on the wisdom of God in choosing to make the way we relate to other Christians as brothers and sisters. How and why is this a beautiful thing?
  3. Is there anyone in your local body of faith who is uniquely difficult for you to care for? How could treating them as if they were your own brother or sister reshape the way you view and interact with them?
  4. Read Hebrews 13:2. Many people today view hospitality as akin to being a good host to people who come into their home. While that is certainly a virtuous and godly posture, the biblical and historical meaning of hospitality is richer than that. In the New Testament, to be hospitable means to display love to strangers and foreigners. While we obviously live in a different time and context than the early church, what potential opportunities do you have to show true hospitality?
  5. Read Hebrews 13:3 and Matthew 25:34–40. According to Matthew 25:40, what is the significance of obeying the instruction given in Hebrews 13:3? What opportunities do you have to put that instruction into action this week?
  6. Is there anyone you know who is suffering for the sake of the gospel? Pray for them right now. Consider how you can uniquely love them this week.
